A lot of revelations are beginning to unravel regarding the circumstances leading to the detention of most of the inmates who were freed by protesting youths today.
In a viral video making rounds, an escapee is seen narrating how he was framed up for an offence he knew nothing about which landed him in prison for over two years till his eventual release by protesters.
According to him, the investigating Police Officer whom he identified as “Dele” was responsible for his ordeal. He claimed Dele roped him in an offence he knew nothing about after collecting bribe from the real culprits and failing to do a proper investigation. He has been in detention awaiting trial ever since then until his release today.
Another escapee, seen in an added viral video claimed he had been in prison since 2016 over an allegation of murder, an offence he knew nothing about. He said he was a farmer before his ordeal in the hands of the supposed law enforcement agency. He further disclosed that there was never any court judgement to warrant his detention.
The narration from the above escapees goes to show the level of rot in Nigeria’s system of policing and investigation. Prior to the Benin jailbreak, EndSars protesters have made attempts to bring to the forefront several cases of injustices and abuse of power by security operatives in the country.
These revelations are a pointer to the need by the nation’s security apparatus to ensure adequate investigation are carried out into unravelling the true circumstances leading to the detention of most prison inmates across the country.
