Two lives were confirmed lost on Saturday while 8 others have been rescued alive from the rubbles of a three-storey building, which collapsed on Freeman Street, Lagos Island, in Lagos State. Among the confirmed dead is a three year old child whose birthday celebration was planned to today.
The ill-fated incidence happened at about 4am as the building was reported to have suffered total collapse, leaving its occupants trapped while they they were fast asleep.
Findings revealed that the affected building had prior to the collapse been marked by the State Government for demolition, but warnings were ignored while residents continued to live in the house until the time of the collapse.
Neighbours of the victims were said to have alerted emergency responders about the incident but on arrival, the first victim to be recovered was a male child, who was pronounced dead.
Confirming the incident, Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the corpse had been taken to the mortuary, adding that on-the-spot treatment had been administered on rescued victim.
He said, “The agency responded to emergency calls on the collapsed building at Freeman Street in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State.
As at the time of this report, rescue operation is still on-going on the affected building.
