The governors of the states of Ekiti and Jos, Kayode Fayemi and Simon Lalong, have imposed 24-hours curfew in their states following the tension caused by the activities of hoodlums who have seized the opportunity of the EndSars protests to perpetrate crimes.
In Ekiti, the State governor, Fayemi, imposed a 24-hour curfew which he ordered to commence from 10 pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.
This directive he said, became imperative as the hoodlums have capitalized on the #ENDSARS protests to rape, assault, rob and extort innocent citizens across the state.
Earlier today, there were reports of rampage in the state capital by unidentified hoodlums who were said to have attacked some police stations to replicate the Edo incidence and free prisoners, but the thugs were successfully repelled by the security forces.
Fayemi, in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, described the activities of the hoodlums as most unfortunate. He expressed shock over how a protest as peaceful as that conducted by the young #EndSars agitators could have been hijacked by hoodlums. He said Government is concerned that if this state of affairs is allowed to continue unabated, it will lead to a breakdown of law and order thereby threatening the wellbeing of the people of Ekiti”
Plateau State under the leadership of the Governor, Simon Lalong, is not spared of the high rate of crime that has bedeviled a number of states in the country.
A disturbing report from the state shows that at least three lives may have been lost to the EndSars protest on Tuesday. However, the activities of the hoodlums in the state took a deadly part today, Tuesday, when protest led to destruction of properties and looting of business premises along Ahmadu Bello way as well as the burning of a worship center.
According to sources in the Plateau, some hoodlums have seized the opportunity of the protest to pursue their personal criminal aims. There were reported cases of extortions, stealing, and destruction of properties and attacks of any officer of the law. Declaring a 24-hour curfew in the state, Lalong said, “It is rather unfortunate that in the past few days, the #EndSars protest which began peacefully have gradually degenerated to the situation where hoodlums have attacked and molested innocent citizens who are going about their normal businesses. However, essential service providers are immune from the curfew.
